What is under the surface of each worktop
Every worktop material starts as something different: paper, sand, wood pulp, or crushed stone, bound or shaped into a slab you can cut and fit. What it is made of decides what it does when a hot pan lands on it, when water sits in a seam, or when a knife catches the surface by accident.
Laminate
Laminate is a thin decorative layer bonded onto a core board, usually chipboard or MDF. The core gives the worktop its thickness and strength; the laminate itself is only a surface skin, so the edge of the board is usually covered with a strip or shaped into a postformed edge, where the laminate is wrapped over a curved profile. A pan straight off the hob can scorch or blister the surface, and if water gets past a seam or a cut-out for a sink or hob, the core underneath can swell.
Compact laminate
Compact laminate is built from paper-and-resin layers, pressed solid all the way through. There is no board underneath to swell if water reaches it, and a cut edge shows the same material as the face. It still marks under sustained heat, though the damage stays closer to the surface than it does on a laminate with a wood-based core.
Quartz
Quartz worktops are engineered from crushed quartz bound with resin, giving a hard, non-porous surface that resists everyday staining and scratching well. The resin content is also its limit: a very hot pan set directly on the surface, or prolonged sun and strong bleach, can mark or discolour it over time in a way the stone content itself would not.
Sintered stone
Sintered stone is made by fusing mineral particles under heat and pressure, with no resin binder, which is why it tolerates direct heat better than a resin-bound quartz. It is typically supplied as large, thin panels, and that thinness is a trade-off: the material needs proper support along its edges and around cut-outs, because a thin panel can crack under a point load in a way a thicker slab would not.
Solid surface
Solid surface worktops are made from acrylic, or a blend of acrylic and polyester resin, solid in colour all the way through. Because the colour runs through the material, light scratches and small burns can be sanded out, and seams between sections can be bonded almost invisibly. The same softness that makes it repairable also means it marks more easily under direct heat than a stone-based worktop.
Timber
Timber worktops are built from real wood, usually in narrow strips glued into a solid plank. Wood moves with humidity, expanding and contracting across the seasons, and needs an oil or sealed finish kept up to resist water at the sink and hob. It will scorch and dent with everyday use, but a sanded and re-oiled surface can bring a worn worktop back close to new.

Joints, edges and the templating visit
A worktop rarely arrives as one piece. Anywhere a run turns a corner, passes a doorway, or simply runs longer than the sheet or slab it's cut from, there's a joint, and where that joint falls and how it's made differs by material.
Where joints fall and why they show
Laminate and solid surface worktops are usually cut from standard sheet sizes, so a long run or an L-shaped layout often needs a joint partway along, typically positioned to fall away from the sink or the most-used section of counter. Quartz and sintered stone slabs are larger, so a joint may only be needed on longer runs or where the layout turns a corner; stone fabricators generally try to place it where it's least seen. Solid surface is the one material that can be seamed with an adhesive that's colour-matched and sanded flush, so the joint is felt more than seen once finished. Timber worktops are jointed much like solid timber furniture, glued and doweled along the grain, and a well-made joint should sit flush without a visible gap.
Edge profiles: what you're choosing between
Laminate typically uses a postformed edge, where the laminate itself wraps over a rounded front edge with no separate lipping strip, giving a smooth curve without a seam at the front. A square-edged laminate worktop instead has a strip fixed to the front face, which is a visible joint line. Solid surface and stone worktops can be edge-built, meaning a strip of the same material is bonded underneath the front edge so the worktop reads as a thicker slab than it actually is, without the cost of using thicker material throughout. Timber edges are usually moulded or rounded over and are the one edge type a homeowner can realistically re-sand and refinish themselves over the years.
The templating visit
Templating is the visit a stone or solid surface fabricator makes to take an exact template of the worktop opening once your cabinets are installed and level, so the material can be cut precisely for tap holes, hob and sink cut-outs, and every joint position, before it ever reaches a saw. It happens after the carcasses go in, not before, because the fit has to match the room as built rather than a plan drawn weeks earlier. Quartz, sintered stone and most solid surface worktops go through this step; laminate and timber are more often cut to size from measurements or finished on site by the fitter, without a separate templating appointment.
Because the stone can't be cut until templating has happened, any late change to the layout, an appliance swapped for one with different dimensions, or a hob moved a few centimetres, pushes the whole worktop stage back. It's worth having appliance choices settled before the fitter installs the carcasses, so the templating visit only needs to happen once. Two things worth checking once you've picked a material
A hob set into your new worktop still needs the right clearance above it, and the worktop itself should appear on your quote as its own priced, specified line.
